The survey is carried out by one of our senior designers at your property — it’s not something we ask you to do yourself. They will take precise measurements of every wall, ceiling height, floor level, window and door position, and note the location of existing plumbing, gas, and electrical connections. They’ll also assess structural elements like chimney breasts or load-bearing walls that might affect layout. The survey typically takes 60–90 minutes and is completely free of charge. Everything recorded forms the basis of your bespoke design, so accuracy at this stage directly determines how well your finished kitchen fits.

Yes — and this is where made-to-measure design genuinely earns its value. Because every unit is manufactured to specification, we’re not limited to standard module widths or depths. Tall pull-out larder units, corner solutions that actually use the corner, integrated wine storage, custom-height drawers sized to your specific crockery — all of these are achievable within the Schmidt system. We also offer a wide range of interior organisation accessories that can be configured precisely to how your household uses a kitchen, rather than a generic interpretation of storage.
Once a design is signed off and an order placed, manufacturing in our German factory typically takes four to six weeks. Before that, the design process — from initial survey to a finalised specification you’re happy to commit to — usually takes two to four weeks, depending on how many rounds of revision are needed. Installation on site takes three to five days for a standard kitchen, or longer for larger or more complex projects involving structural work. In total, most clients go from first survey to finished kitchen within ten to fourteen weeks.

This is something we’re asked about frequently, particularly in Fulham where so many homes have original Victorian or Edwardian features. Our in-frame and shaker door ranges work particularly well in period properties, and we can specify paint finishes that either complement or intentionally contrast with original joinery and cornicing. Because Schmidt’s made-to-measure process is factory-based rather than hand-crafted, the cost premium over a standard kitchen is relatively modest, particularly when you factor in the cost of adapting a standard kitchen to an irregular space, which often involves additional carpentry, custom panels, and labour that quickly erodes any initial saving. For spaces with significant structural quirks, made-to-measure is frequently the more cost-effective choice overall, as well as the better-looking one.
